Keith Richards: In His Own Words
Published in Paperback by Omnibus Press (March, 1996)
Authors: Keith Richards, Mick St. Michael, Mick st Michael, and Mick St
Average review score:

He Should Be Knighted
Too often billed as the scruffy-haired, swashbuckling sidekick to Mick Jagger, Keith gets a bum rap. This man is the resident philosopher of the Rolling Stones. Ask him a question and you get an unadulterated answer. For instance: What about the Beatles and their experience with the Mahareshi? "Hey that was their gig but I have to draw the line on swamis." In his own words, glitter rock 'n' roll came to Keith whether he wanted it or not. He is a man who simply loves his craft. Were he not a star, he would still be happy playing for tip-jar money. This is a man who on unencumbered Friday night has bangers and mash and plays dominoes with his dad. This is man of no fragile glamour rock ego. "I think photography is magic. It's even made me look good a couple of times." As for his reputation as reckless drug pirate: "I never turned blue in someone else's bathroom," he says, "that's the height of bad manners." Even behind the basset hound face of age, Keith hangs on to those youthful characteristics that have kept his cylinders firing for lo these many years. He still has his heroes. High in those ranks is none other that another charter member to the World's Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band - Charlie Watts. "Without Charlie there would be no Stones," he says. So, Keith Richards. Wit and charm. Seem like an oxymoron. Hardly, make yourself "Happy" and don't deprive yourself of the "Satisfaction" that this little book gives.

Kid's Chords
"Devil Without A Cause" is, in this person's opinion, a Kid Rock fan's dream. If you have been trying to learn Kid's songs on guitar, get this book. It shows techniques, strategies, and how to play like Rock. I give this book 5 stars. If it was possible, I would award it more. Hey Mr. B!

Kid Rock: The History of Rock

Really FUN
This is a REALLY good guitar tab book. 14 tracks, with all notes and lyrics. What surprised me was how easy and fun it was to play this. It's easy some to play guitar on some songs like "Prodigal Son". I actually wanted to give up, but when I heard the exact tune come out of my guitar, I was SO HAPPY!!! Well I learned you just have to stick with it, and really just practice a little bit. And I can't wait till I can play "American Bad Ass!!!"

A King's Legacy: The Clyde King Story
Published in Paperback by McGraw Hill - NTC (May, 1999)
Authors: Clyde King and Burton Rocks
Average review score:

A great book!
This is a simple story about a ordinary guy that had an extraordinary life. Kids today don't know what they have missed when they grow up with all the toys and all the priviledges and all the sports camps. Today we would call someone growing up in Clyde King's environment "severely underprivledged" and probably unable to make much of themselves. His life story however shows that where there's a will there is in fact a way. If you can't afford a baseball, do what Clyde and his brothers did...make it with a rock, twine and tape. Can't afford a glove?...trace your hand on a scrap of old leather (from a thrown out sofa) and sew the two pieces together. Not only did his determination take him to college, but also to the big leagues and 56 years in major league baseball!!! What a story!

The Kinks Kronikles
Published in Paperback by William Morrow (December, 1984)
Author: John Mendelssohn
Average review score:

Days I'll Remember All My Life
While it is true that God has saved the Kinks, it took John Mendelssohn to put their career (through the early Arista years) into perspective. And, though his perspective is heavily filtered by the late 60's cynical voice, the book is one of the best accounts of a truly enigmatic group.

The book takes the Kinks as seriously as the Beatles as recorded performers and makes a very good case for Ray Davies inclusion in the same breathe as Lennon-McCartney. While Mr. Mendelssohn dwells on the late 60's from "Face To Face" through "Lola versus Powerman and The Moneygoround", it is justified in the fascinating insights he provides into these bona fide masterpieces.

Mr. Mendelssohn has been a huge champion of the Kinks and this serves as the ultimate kronickle of the Kinkdom, being far more honest, if less revealing, than "X-Ray", Ray Davies interesting but flawed third-person autobiography.

The only dissapointing part of this book is the author's tunnel-vision regarding the band's underrated work during the late 1970's and early 1980's. While their studio work suffered slightly, their concerts became more polished and exciting. In fact, the standouts from their recent "To The Bone" collection draw heavily from this period.

In summary, this book is an absolute must read for any well respected man. Get it today! God Save The Kinks!

Kishina: A True Story of Gorilla Survival
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Maxine Rock
Average review score:

What a moving--and educational--story!
Everyone from kids, to teens, to adults will really enjoy and appreciate this lovely book about a very special gorilla and the people who take care of her and her "family." The story is quite moving, so readers almost don't realize how educational it is as well. You'll be surprised at how much you'll learn about animal behavior, habitats, and environmental protection--and you'll be charmed by the story. It's a great book for parents to read and discuss with their children. Very thought-provoking. Highly recommended.

Kylie: La La La
Published in Hardcover by Hodder & Stoughton General Division (07 November, 2002)
Authors: Kylie Minogue and William Baker
Average review score:

Great insight into Kylie's World
This book is great; lots of photos and behind-the-scenes views of Kylie's life and especially her tours. While it is nice to hear her address her feelings on topics such as the "Impossible Princess" album and her SAW years, it is not the tell-all autobiography many had hoped it would be. Kylie does offer insights here and there, but she states early in the book that she's not ready to write an autobiography yet. For example, she barely mentions her relationship with Michael Hutchence.

My only real gripes with this book are that sometimes the text is really difficult to read with the color combinations that were chosen, and that William Baker, who wrote much of the book, injects too much of his own autobiographical information. I know that for part of it, he is trying to establish his credentials as a fashion consultant or whatever he is, but it comes off as incredibly self-absorbed a lot of the time. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that Kylie, as the star of the book, allowed that to happen. I would have given it only 4 1/2 stars if that were possible, but I rounded it up to 5 to be fair.

These are minor complaints however...it really is a great book. I had to go watch my Kylie Tour DVDs again after reading the it, taking into account all the tidbits I had learned about what went on. Plus, the photograph collection really is amazing. Looking through the pictures that chronicle her evolution over the years, it is really easy to see why some call her "The Australian Madonna" here in the States. No Kylie fan should pass this book up!

Larousse Guide to Minerals Rocks and Fossils
Published in Hardcover by Lafayette Books (September, 1977)
Authors: W.R. Hamilton, A.R. Wooley, and A.C. Bishop
Average review score:

Best single-volume guidebook to minerals, rocks, & fossils
Too bad this book remains out of print. It's the best single guidebook to minerals, rocks, and fossils ever made! Though pocket-sized (4.5 inches by 7.5 inches by 320 pages), the book is chock full of superb photographs, and the text describing each sample is accurate and comprehensive. Organization of the book is excellent, with minerals first, then rocks, then fossils. Within each of the main sections there's an introduction that defines key terms and provides a brief but clear summary of important concepts. I used to use this book when teaching an introductory geology course. I also used the Audubon Society's guide and several other widely-available guidebooks. None of those is as well-illustrated, or as well organized, as this book. I sure wish Larousse would put it back in print!

The Last Rock Eagle: Selected Poems
Published in Paperback by Dufour Editions (01 January, 1992)
Authors: Blaga Dimitrova, Brenda Walker, and V. Levchev
Average review score:

Bulgaria's best poet
Blaga Dimitrova is Bulgaria's greatest living poet, and perhaps, is one of the greatest poets writing in any language today. This translation aptly captures the beauty and force of her work, and a great deal of the sheer beauty of her verse. This book should be a must buy for anyone interested in Bulgarian literature and East European in general.
